English, Maths & ESOL
Background & Experience:
I am a Maths, English and ESOL Specialist at NALS, with over 15 years of experience in adult learning and 30 years in education. Before joining adult learning, I worked as a secondary school teacher, which gave me valuable experience in supporting learners with a wide range of abilities, learning styles and goals.
Throughout my career, I have enjoyed helping people develop the skills and confidence they need to move forward, whether that is progressing into employment, further study or simply becoming more confident in everyday life. Working in adult learning is particularly rewarding because of the diverse experiences and perspectives that learners bring to the classroom.
Key Expertise:
I specialise in teaching Maths, English and ESOL, supporting learners to develop practical skills that make a real difference in their personal and professional lives. I enjoy finding ways to make learning accessible, engaging and relevant, helping learners build confidence in areas they may previously have found challenging. I am particularly interested in creating inclusive learning environments where learners feel comfortable asking questions, developing new skills and achieving goals they may not have thought possible.
Teaching Philosophy:
I believe that learning should be supportive, engaging and centred around the individual. Every learner arrives with their own experiences, strengths and challenges, and I aim to create an environment where everyone feels valued and able to succeed.
My teaching focuses on practical application, showing learners how Maths, English and language skills can be used in everyday situations. Above all, I want learners to leave my classes feeling more confident, capable and motivated to continue their learning journey.
Additional Information:
One of the things I enjoy most about my role is supporting adults who are returning to education, often after many years away from the classroom. Watching learners gain confidence, overcome self-doubt and achieve their goals is what makes the job so rewarding.
Outside of work, I enjoy reading, walking, running and arts and crafts. I love getting lost in a good book, spending time outdoors and keeping active, while creative projects give me an opportunity to relax and try new things. These interests help me maintain a positive balance and reflect my belief that learning and personal development can happen at any stage of life.
